But the problem though is that she wants to figure out where the first American flag is, because she thinks it’s stuck in the airport she’s staying in, but there’s an infamous gang who’s in her way from stealing it. They also try to best their nemesis Principal Barkin by attempting pranks that cause the closure of the school for the first time since he became principal. Both Miles and Niles are amusing characters. Miles initially wanted to be the “the king of pranks” in his new school, so he did not want to team up with the school’s best original prankster Niles. However, Niles, who is a more disciplined and cautious of the two, was patient and in the end, they became a good team and the best of friends. The best scene of the book is when Principal Barkin first discovered a surprise left by the pranksters in his office and tried to hide it. The book’s humorous tone as well as funny illustrations makes it a fun read. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of humour and loves reading entertaining stories. - Isabella ![]() The book Captain Riddle’s Treasure by G.V. In the book the main character is a dog named Hachiko, or known as Hachi. He is a small puppy. In the book, the problem of the story is that Hachi’s master died and no one can tell Hachi because he’s a dog. But Hachi doesn’t die because a boy takes care of him for 10 years. I loved the book. It was unexpected when the owner of Hachi died, and it made me feel sad knowing that a puppy waited for his master for ten years, and he didn’t know that his master died. In the end, I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone. -Beck ![]() The fiction book Eddie Red Undercover by Marcia Wells is an amazing book about two kids with extraordinary abilities who solve a most wanted police chase in New York City. The main character is Riley O’Chanter, she is a very adventurous soul, with cleverness and wit inside out. Riley is about 11 years old and has a younger sister named Lottie. Through many mysteries she discovers that her dad is the Head of the Luck Uglies, which explains the glowing blue choker that her family wears, which can warn off monsters. Rye is very caring and compassionate to whomever she meets, especially to her best friend Folly as well as Quinn. The main problem is that the Bognoblins are going to attack the village. The reason is that the Earl has captured one of their kind, and is not going to hand his prisoner over. The only ones who can save Drowning are the Luck Uglies, but they have long been exiled to Beyond the Shale, as criminals never to return. How will Rye and her friends save the village that they love? I think this book is filled with excitement of the Luck Uglies, the friendship of friends, strangers, and family, but most of all, the adventure that twists through every word in this trilling story. I also love the surprise and amazement that caught my breath when the Luck Ugly Rye meets, turns out to be her long-lost father! That twist in the plot changed everything, just like when I realized that the Earl was the true enemy of Drowning, the evil cause behind the old hate of the Luck Uglies. This book is an exhilarating catch to all those who read it, that's my true opinion! -Serena ![]() The fiction book The Witches by Roald Dahl is about a small boy who encounters the grand committee of witches, then he and his grandmother have to find a way to stop them from getting rid of all the children of England! There are two main characters in this story, one is a little boy whose name is unknown, so I shall make him go by “The boy.” “The boy” is the narrator of this story, he is very determined and courageous when he puts his mind to his goals ahead. He is very smart in these plans that he has with his grandmother, and he can also find the positive side to everything. “The boy” loves his grandmother tremendously, and could never have thought to live without her. He was even closer to her than his own mother, before the car accident happened that killed his parents. The other main character is the grandmother, whom “The boy” calls “Grandmamma”. “Grandmamma” was confronted by a witch once in her life, and it was not a good experience, with a lost thumb for a souvenir. She is very protective of her grandson, and loves him just as dearly as he loves her. “Grandmamma” also has her saying, ‘Heaven may take my soul, but Norway shall keep my bones.’ Therefore saying that she loves her homeland very much. The main problem is that The Grand High Witch (the leader of all the witches) has formulated a potion that can get rid of all the children in the world by turning them into mice! “The boy” and his grandmamma have to stop them before children of the human population have vanished from the face of the earth! My opinion is that this is another one of the beloved books by Roald Dahl. I still remember when my first grade teacher first read this to me, I was hypnotised by the action in the spells, the love for family, and the wonderful yearning of adventure that all the characters felt! I also like how the author explains in so much detail of all the settings we are being introduced to. Such as the crowded, superior dining room, the filthy, grimy kitchen, and the colored dragon shades. I love how the book just pulls you in, never letting go, until you finish the very last word. -Serena ![]() The fiction book Dinosaur Boy by Cory Putman Oakes is about a boy who inherited the stegosaurus gene from his grandfather and his difficulties and discoveries because he is part dinosaur. The dinosaur boy, Sawyer, is in the 5th grade along with his best friend, Elliot, and soon becomes friends with Sylve who was revealed to be part martian. The three friends uncovered a plot by their principal to ship off earth kids to other planets to be used as pets, and attempted to rescue their friends. I enjoyed this book because I found this book as a funny, humorous, and light read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book with humour, and quirky features. -Isabella D. ![]() The science fiction novel The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is about four extraordinary talented kids that go on a mission to save the world from an evil genius that wants to control the human population. The four main characters have a few things in common : They are all extremely gifted, they all have the love of truth, they are all alone, no parents to take care of them, and they are all children. First is Reynard Muldoon, Reynie is 11 years-old and is a natural leader, his friends all look up to him for guidance and support. He has the great quality of an open mind, and a growth mind set of a leader. He is an orphan with no memory of his parents, and up to now he has been in an orphanage taught by his beloved tutor, Mrs. Perumal. Reynie has the gift of strong logic sense. He can decipher puzzles and use his head to solve riddles and mysteries with just common sense. Next is Kate Wetherall, although she wants her friends to call her “The Great Kate Weather Machine”. Kate is 12 years-old and was raised in a circus after her mother died and her father “supposedly” abandoned her as a baby. Kate is a very confident girl, all the way from her high ponytail, to her circus painted sneakers. Her gift is quick thinking and amazing physical abilities. Kate can whip out her tan-tinted rope from her ever-present bucket at her waist, tie it to two doorknobs, and tight-rope right across the room in less than 15 seconds. That’s astounding! Then there’s George Washington, although he prefers “Sticky” (he’s a little sensitive about his name.) Sticky is the same age as Reynie, and is a shy, timid fellow. Whenever he gets anxious, (which is a lot) he tends to polish his spectacles, and fumble around- physically and mentally. Sticky is the only one out of the fantastic four that remembers his family. It is a sad story - why he became a runaway, through a series of miscommunications. Which is also the reason why he is bald, a formula he made months ago had burned his hair off, to disguise himself better. Sticky’s gift is of mental memory, he can read an 1,000 paged book in minutes, and everything just sticks to his head, hence the name. Which is shocking if you think about it, just a glance at a page and he will know everything it says! His knowledge is beyond what 50 experts will ever learn in their lives! Last but not least is Constance Contraire, Constance is a very petite, stubborn young girl. Her size is exceedingly staggering, about the size of a three year-old! (hmmm) Constance doesn’t like being asked questions, so we don’t know a lot about her past life, only that she doesn’t have a family to take care of her. She has the stunning power of stubbornness, which comes to good use later on. The main problem is that Ledroptha Curtain, a man of a genius mind, but a malicious soul, wants to have control over the world. (how is “Ledroptha” a boy’s name?) Mr. Curtain has designed a machine that can brainwash people to do his bidding, as well a mental transmitter that sends messages to people’s brains that made humans do whatever Ledroptha wants! The Mysterious Benedict Society has to stop him before he sends the final, and strongest wave out! My opinion is that this is the best science fiction book I have ever read! I love how the plot keeps my eyes glued to every word. As well as the shocking twists of betrayal, surprise, and knowledge. It made me feel so exited when the characters figured something out, or were one step closer to “Mission Accomplished.” I love the action in their fights, the mystery in the puzzles, and thrill of everlasting adventure! -Serena ![]() The realistic fiction novel Turn Left at the Cow by Lisa Bullard is about a boy and his two friends that uncover a mystery of lost money that has remained hanging around his family since his father died. The main character is Travis, a thirteen year-old boy who has always been wondering about his dead-before-born dad. Trav is an average boy, not that smart, not that strong, not that talented. He isn’t into girls, or sports, although he can play video games. Most of the time he’s pretty shy, but when you get to know him, the mischievous daring lad comes out of hiding. The main problem is the entire bunch of cash that was stolen one night from a bank “supposedly” by Trav’s dad. Back in California Travis was feeling left out in his mom’s current life, with her new boyfriend, her new house, her new life- without Trav. When Travis decides to visit his grandma for a few weeks in a little town in Minnesota - the site of the crime, the family reunion becomes a blaming of wrong, a chase of the burglar, and a dangerous uncovering of the past. My opinion is that I love the danger and the thrill of the adventure in this book! I love how they finally uncover who is the real bad guy in a series of mysteries and twisting plots. I made me jump with a shock to find out who was behind all of it! One thing I would have changed is to hurry up the plot in the beginning. I was reading the book with no enthusiasm in the front, when at last the action started at ¾ of the story! But otherwise from that, I love the glamor and excitement that came with the romance, and the final push of the conflict that finished it all! -Serena ![]() The mythological fiction novel The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan is about the once wonderful god Apollo who became a mortal, and undergoes emotional changes throughout his journey to save the world. The main character is Apollo, who is the son of Zeus and Leto, and twin brother to the goddess Artemis. Apollo was once the god of prophecy, music, medicine, healing, plague, the sun, truth, archery (but not hunting), poetry, and much more! Being a god, he can appear any way he liked, but usually is seen as a well tanned, muscular youth, with long golden hair, and a bow slung across his back. Apollo is a very big bragger, and likes to claim credit for a lot of things he didn’t do. He is a very flashy guy, being the sun god after all, he likes to flirt with the ladies and play the cool dude. Then, when stripped of his powers he became the human, Lester Papadopoulos, a scrawny 16 year-old with curly brown hair, blue eyes, and a bad case of acne. When Apollo’s leverage of authority was taken away, he lost his godly knowledge too. Along went his confidence at first, but later he turned out to be a leader in a mortal’s state of mind. These circumstances have made Apollo more generous, humble and caring- something that never would have occurred to him if not for this experience. The main problem is that the once dead Emperor Nero or the “Beast” has come back alive as a ghost god, fueled by the fear that mortals have in him. Nero has slowly recruited runaways, orphans and other children to do his bidding, all through the war with Gaea and even before! Now his plan is finally coming together, with all four oracles of Delphi shut down and hidden from the world, no one can see the future. Apollo has to re-open the oracles of Delphi, find Nero and kill his life force, restore peace to the world, all but being a puny ex-god with amnesia. My opinion is that this is one of the best Rick Riordan (he is an amazing author) books I have ever read! I love the action that Apollo has to go through to conquer the Beast. I also love the affection that Apollo feels toward his mistress/ruler, Meg, at the end of the story when they part. The humor is always there, really to jump out and surprise you, like a cat going to pounce on its prey. I was also taken away by the twist near the end, that changed the way I looked at some of the characters. That sudden trip in the plot made me feel sad, surprised, but most of all sympathy, for Meg, and for Apollo, for what they had to suffer. This novel is sure to make you have tears of sadness, scream with joy, and bellow with laughter! Ha ha ha!!! -Serena ![]() I Survived: The Bombing of Pearl Harbor by Lauren Tarshis is a Realistic Fiction book about a boy named Danny. His mom is working where they are bombing! Now, he trying to save her! But, he has some help. In my opinion, the book was great. I loved the twist where Danny save Mack by hotwiring a car! Also, Danny reminded me of Leo, who is the guy from I Survived: The San Francisco Earthquake. -Brandon K I Survived the Bombing of Pearl Harbor is a historical fiction by Lauren Tarshis it is about a boy named Max and his mother that had just moved to Hawaii. Max is unhappy and angry with his new home and has no friends. One day while Max’s mom is at work max sees plains in the air then bombs are dropping from the plains and Max is running away as fast as he can. Many things happen in this book that make you want to keep reading. I liked this book and would recommend it to a friend because the held my attention and made me want to keep reading. It was not very slow but still made me want to skip ahead to see what would happen. -Brooks ![]() In the nonfiction book Molly Pitcher by Augusta Stevenson, Mary (Molly) Pitcher, the main character, has a nice, young childhood on a farm. She wins a cattle competition when she was around 10 years old. Then, she almost gets robbed. When she grows up, she moves to Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Once war begins, her husband dies in the war. Her new husband also ends up fighting in the war and dies of heat exhaustion, so, she takes over his cannon that he fired and is a hero. She almost gets hit by a cannon ball from the British, but it just missed in between her legs. She observed that she was lucky it did not go higher otherwise it would’ve caused horrible damage. The main problem in this story is that she wants to fight in the war but she is not allowed to. She ends up going anyway. She saves hundreds of lives with water. I would definitely recommend this book to many of my friends and family because I love how the book held my interest the whole way throughout it, and made me want to keep reading because it was just so interesting. It definitely made me curious to know more about the Revolutionary War and the important people in it. The information was presented clearly enough that a 3rd grader could probably read it. That was one of my favorite parts about the book. -Shae ![]() I Survived: The Japanese Tsunami by Lauren Tarshis is a Historical Fiction book about a boy named Ben. Ben goes to Japan to see his Uncle, or Ojisan, and Ben is still grieving about his father's death. But, something happens that turns his world upside down. The main character, Ben, is from California, and knows no Japanese. He likes basketball. He doesn't understand how has dad was in the Air Force, and got stranded on an island, but dies in a car crash! The problem is that there is an earthquake, and a tsunami, and he has to try to survive. I loved the book! It was very exciting, and I wanted to keep reading. Also, I didn’t see the part when Nya, the cat, saved Ben coming. -Brandon K ![]() Warriors : Into The Wild is a fictional story by Erin Hunter. The main character, Rusty, later Firepaw, and then Fireheart, is a red tomcat that goes into the forest and learns the ways of the clans. The main problem is that Tigerclaw, a cat in thunderclan, killed the thunderclan deputy and is claiming that the deputy died in a battle. I liked this book because it’s plot changed a lot, and it kept my interest. I have read this book 5 times now, and the series twice. I loved this book. -Michael ![]() The book Artemis Fowl by Eion Colfer was a really good fantasy book about a 12 year old genius going against a fairy police force trying to get back something Artemis stole from them. The book focuses on Artemis Fowl mainly because he always comes up with the schemes and plans in the book, and because wherever he goes, action takes place near him. But that also can be a bad thing because the action that always takes place near him always involves the fairies trying to get him. In the end, I liked the book because it was very unexpected what Artemis might do to stop the fairies, and I also liked the story because it made me feel good about being smart. -Beck ![]() Tales From A Not So Graceful Ice Princess is a fictional story in the Dork Diaries series by Rachel Russel. The character Nikki Maxwell has to ice skate in a contest otherwise her crush will have to move away and his pet store fuzzy friends will close. The problem is that Nikki is a terrible skater and falls about 4 times in a 3 minute routine. I liked this routine because of all the drama and craziness of her life. The story was presented clearly and creatively. It made me want to read more and more because it kept me suspended. That's why I liked the 4th dork diaries book. -Chloe L. ![]() Coach Hyatt is a Riot is by Dan Gutman it is a fiction book. The main character is A.J.
