The Night Gardener, by Jonathan Auxier, is a fantasy-fiction book about two Irish orphans who are looking for work. After they run into a creepy house in the woods, they will soon discover strange and powerful magic that lurk in the house day and night. The two orphans, Molly and Kip, are siblings. Molly is 14 years-old and has a strong personality; she always gets in fights, and never lets anyone or anything hurt her or her brother. Kip on the other hand is handicapped, and never really says much; he’s a shy 11 year old boy. When the two orphans who lost their parents at sea are looking for work, their luck has some cost to it. As the kids spend several nights at the Windsor house as servants, they soon find that the huge tree in front of the house is home to not only magic, but the nightman, a tall, old, creepy man who wants this family out of the house for good. These two orphans and the Windsor family go through hard times to try and capture this demon. I really enjoyed this book; it was adventurous and mysterious. I liked it because every page you turned in this book there was always another question you had to ask yourself. The only thing I didn’t really like about this book was that it definitely wasn’t the funniest book; it was more mysterious, and action-packed than funny. My favorite part was when Molly found out that the nightman only comes at night, and how she discovers that he can take peoples’ souls. I hope you can find time to read this book, because I loved it. -Ellie
